An aluminium sliding door opens a living room to the patio or garden without a door swinging into your furniture. It is the most common patio door in South Africa, with slim frames, large glass panels and smooth rollers that run along a track. Tell us the size and style you need and we send your request to an independent installer or fabricator nearby, who measures and quotes you directly. We don't manufacture or fit sliding doors, but requesting a quote through us is free and carries no obligation.

Two-panel and three-panel sliders

A standard sliding aluminium door has two panels: one fixed and one that slides across it. For wider openings, a three-panel slider has either one or two moving panels, giving you a bigger gap to walk through. Panels can be glazed with clear, tinted or low-E safety glass, and SANS 10400-N requires safety glass in doors. In larger homes, sliders are often paired with a fixed glass panel or a fanlight above to fill a tall opening.

Sliding door sizes: standard or made to measure

Common sliding door sizes in South Africa are around 1.5 m, 1.8 m, 2.1 m and 2.4 m wide at roughly 2.1 m high, which suits typical brickwork openings. Anything outside those sizes is made to measure, and modern systems can go much wider and taller. Very large panels need heavier profiles, especially at the coast, where wind loading is higher, and in Highveld areas exposed to strong thunderstorm gusts. Your installer will check the opening and advise on the right profile. If you are building, get the fabricator's structural opening sizes before the brickwork goes up, so a standard door fits without extra cutting or infill.

Rollers, locks and a security gate for a sliding door

  • Rollers: adjustable stainless steel or nylon wheels carry the panel; good rollers make a heavy door glide easily
  • Tracks: a raised or flush bottom track, with drainage so rain doesn't pool
  • Locks: hook locks, multi-point locks and anti-lift blocks stop the panel being lifted out of the track
  • Security: a security gate for a sliding door, or a sliding trellis, can be fitted inside or out

What drives the sliding aluminium door price

The sliding aluminium door price depends on the width and height, the number of panels, the profile range, the glass type and thickness, the finish and colour, the lock and handle hardware, and whether an old door must be removed and the opening altered. Mention any security gate, blinds or fanlight you want quoted together, so you get the full picture in one quote. If you are replacing an old steel or timber door, say so, because the opening may need plastering and painting afterwards, and ask whether the installer will also take away the old frame and glass.

Comparing quotes for aluminium sliding doors

The lowest price is not always the best value. When your quote arrives, check:

  • Measure and system: whether the price is based on a site measure, and which aluminium profile range is specified for the size of the opening.
  • Glass and finish: safety glass type and thickness, and powder coating or anodising, with a marine-grade finish near the sea.
  • Installation: removal of old frames, fixing, levelling, sealing and making good, and who handles plaster and paint.
  • Guarantee and timing: what the guarantee covers, the lead time for manufacture and the date for fitting.

What to include in your request

  • Width and height of the opening, and how many panels you want
  • Which side should slide, and whether it opens onto weather
  • Glass preference and colour of the frame
  • Whether you need a security gate or the old door removed

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of an aluminium sliding door?
Many South African sliders are about 1.8 m or 2.4 m wide and 2.1 m high, but sizes vary by system. If your opening is different, the door is simply made to measure.
Why is my sliding door hard to open?
Usually worn or dirty rollers, a damaged track or a door that has dropped out of adjustment. An installer can often replace rollers and adjust the panel rather than replacing the whole door.
Can I fit a security gate to an aluminium sliding door?
Yes. Sliding security gates and trellis doors are commonly fitted on the inside or outside of the opening. Mention it in your request so it can be quoted with the door.
Is a glass sliding door energy efficient?
It can be. Double glazing, low-E glass and thermally improved profiles help meet SANS 10400-XA requirements and reduce heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter.
