Choosing a garage door in aluminium gives you a light door that opens easily and puts less strain on a motor, and it will not rust like untreated steel. That makes aluminium a strong choice for sectional, roll-up and tip-up doors, especially near the coast. AluminiumDoor.co.za is a free quote-request service: describe your garage opening and the door you want, and we pass it to an independent garage door installer in your area, who quotes you directly. We don't supply or fit doors ourselves, and you are free to decline.

Types of aluminium garage doors

The main types of aluminium doors a garage installer fits are:

  • Sectional doors: horizontal panels that roll up on tracks and sit under the ceiling, the most common choice for automation
  • Roll-up doors: narrow slats that coil into a drum above the opening, ideal where there is little headroom
  • Tip-up (up-and-over) doors: a single panel that pivots up, often replacing older wooden doors
  • Slatted or glazed designs: horizontal slats, aluminium with glass panels, or wood-look finishes for modern homes

Insulation, finishes and weather

Insulated aluminium panels, with a foam core between two skins, keep a garage cooler in summer and quieter, which matters if it doubles as a gym or workshop. Choose a powder-coated colour that matches your windows and doors, or a marine-grade finish within a few kilometres of the sea. Ask about wind-rated tracks and bracing at the coast, and dent resistance in hail-prone Highveld areas, where thicker panels hold up better.

Motors, automation and load-shedding

Most new garage doors are fitted with a motor. Ask for a battery backup so the door still opens during load-shedding, plus a manual release for when the battery is flat. Useful extras include safety beams that stop the door closing on a car or child, rolling-code remotes, and app control or an intercom link. Light aluminium panels let a smaller motor do the work and help the battery last longer between charges.

Double garage aluminium doors prices

We don't publish double garage aluminium doors prices, but the main drivers are size (single doors are commonly around 2.4 to 2.5 metres wide and double doors around 4.8 to 5 metres), door type, panel thickness and insulation, finish, the motor and backup battery, and whether an old door and tracks must be removed. Made-to-measure openings cost more than standard sizes.

Comparing quotes for aluminium garage doors

The lowest price is not always the best value. When your quote arrives, check:

  • Measure and system: whether the price is based on a site measure, and which aluminium profile range is specified for the size of the opening.
  • Glass and finish: safety glass type and thickness, and powder coating or anodising, with a marine-grade finish near the sea.
  • Installation: removal of old frames, fixing, levelling, sealing and making good, and who handles plaster and paint.
  • Guarantee and timing: what the guarantee covers, the lead time for manufacture and the date for fitting.

What to include in your request

  • Width and height of the garage opening, and headroom above it
  • Single or double garage, and the door type you prefer
  • Whether you want a motor, battery backup and remotes
  • Whether an old door, tracks or motor must be removed

Frequently asked questions

Is an aluminium garage door better than steel?
Aluminium is lighter and does not rust, which suits coastal areas and makes automation easier. Steel is usually stiffer and more dent-resistant. Insulated aluminium panels close much of that gap.
Will my garage door work during load-shedding?
It will if the motor has a battery backup that is in good condition. Every automated door should also have a manual release so you can open it by hand.
Can an existing garage door be automated?
Many sectional and tip-up doors can, provided they are balanced and run smoothly. An installer will check the springs, tracks and ceiling space first.
Do you install garage doors?
No. We are a free quote-request service. Your request goes to an independent garage door installer near you, who quotes and does the work if you accept.
