An aluminium pivot door turns on a pivot point set into the floor and head rather than on side hinges. That lets it be much wider and taller than a normal door, which is why pivots are chosen for statement entrances in modern homes, estates and offices. Aluminium keeps the leaf rigid and stable in sun and rain. Tell us about your entrance and we pass the request to an independent fabricator or installer in your area, who quotes you directly. We don't make or fit doors ourselves, and the quote request is free.

How aluminium doors pivot

When aluminium doors pivot, they turn on hardware fixed at the top and bottom of the leaf, usually set in from the edge. When you push, the door rotates around that point, with part of the leaf swinging inward and part outward. The weight rests on the bottom pivot, not on the side frame, so very large and heavy leaves can be carried. Most pivot doors use either a floor spring, which is concealed in the floor and controls the closing speed and hold-open, or a simpler free pivot with a separate stop and closer.

Aluminium pivot door designs

Popular aluminium pivot door designs include:

  • Solid panels with grooved, routed or slatted patterns
  • Framed glass leaves with laminated or reeded safety glass
  • Timber-look or textured powder-coated finishes
  • Long vertical bar handles that run most of the door's height
  • Matching sidelights or fixed panels to widen the entrance

Sizes, sidelights and site planning

Pivot doors are typically made to measure, often 1.2 m to 2 m wide and well over 2.4 m tall. A floor spring needs a pocket cut into the slab, so it is easiest to install before the floor finish is laid. The opening must be square and level, and a covered entrance helps protect the floor spring from water. Fixed sidelights on one or both sides add light to a hallway and can carry security glass. Coastal sites should specify marine-grade coatings and stainless steel pivots.

Aluminium pivot door price: what affects it

The aluminium pivot door price depends on the leaf size and weight, solid or glazed design, the pivot or floor spring rated for that weight, the finish, the lock and handle set, sidelights, and any floor or lintel work needed. Smart or biometric locks add to the cost. Ask for the door weight and pivot rating in writing so you can compare quotes fairly. An undersized floor spring wears quickly and lets a heavy leaf drop, so this is not the place to cut corners.

Comparing quotes for aluminium pivot doors

The lowest price is not always the best value. When your quote arrives, check:

  • Measure and system: whether the price is based on a site measure, and which aluminium profile range is specified for the size of the opening.
  • Glass and finish: safety glass type and thickness, and powder coating or anodising, with a marine-grade finish near the sea.
  • Installation: removal of old frames, fixing, levelling, sealing and making good, and who handles plaster and paint.
  • Guarantee and timing: what the guarantee covers, the lead time for manufacture and the date for fitting.

What to include in your request

  • Width and height of the entrance, including any sidelights
  • Preferred design and finish, with a reference photo if you have one
  • Whether the floor is finished and the entrance is covered
  • Lock type you want, such as multi-point or smart lock

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a pivot door and a hinged door?
A hinged door hangs from hinges on its side frame. A pivot door turns on a point at the top and bottom of the leaf, so it can be wider, taller and heavier and has a distinctive swing.
Do pivot doors need a floor spring?
Not always. A floor spring controls the closing and can hold the door open, but some pivots are free-swinging with a separate closer or stop. Your installer will recommend one based on the door's weight and use.
Can a pivot door be installed in an existing house?
Yes, but the floor usually needs to be cut for the bottom pivot or floor spring and the lintel checked. A site visit is needed before the door is made.
Are aluminium pivot doors secure?
They can take multi-point locks, smart locks and laminated glass. The large leaf is strong, but as with any entrance, the lock and frame fixing matter most.
