Six-panel aluminium bifold door folded open onto an entertainment patio

An aluminium folding door, often called a bifold, concertinas its panels to one or both sides so almost the entire opening is clear. That makes it a favourite for entertainment areas, braai rooms and patios where you want indoors and outdoors to feel like one space. Aluminium keeps the frames slim and strong enough for large glass panels. Tell us what you need and we pass your request to an independent installer or fabricator nearby, who quotes you directly. We don't make or fit doors, and the request is free and obligation-free.

Bifold doors aluminium: panel counts and layouts

Bifold doors aluminium systems are usually made with three to seven panels. Odd numbers often include a single "traffic door" that opens like a normal hinged door for everyday use, so you don't have to fold the whole set each time. Panels can fold all to one side, split to both sides, or fold inward or outward. Think about where the folded stack will sit, and keep that space free of furniture, pot plants and burglar bars. Narrower panels fold into a slimmer stack but add more vertical frames to the view, while wider panels are heavier and need stronger hinges and rollers.

Top-hung versus bottom-rolling systems

  • Bottom-rolling: the weight runs on rollers in the floor track; this suits heavy glass and lintels that can't carry much load
  • Top-hung: panels hang from a track in the head, leaving a lighter bottom guide; this needs a strong, level lintel or beam
  • Thresholds: both types can have raised weather sills or recessed flush tracks

Your installer will check the structure above the opening before recommending a system.

Frameless folding doors

A frameless folding door uses thick toughened glass panels joined by slim top and bottom rails, with no vertical frames between them. It gives an almost uninterrupted view and is often used to enclose patios and balconies. Frameless systems are less weather-tight than framed bifolds and usually don't carry the same security, so they suit covered areas rather than fully exposed walls. All glass must meet SANS 10400-N safety glass rules.

Bi folding aluminium doors prices: cost factors

We don't publish bi folding aluminium doors prices. A quote depends on the opening width and height, the number of panels, framed or frameless design, top-hung or bottom-rolling hardware, glass type and thickness, the finish and colour, locks and handles, and any building work needed on the lintel or floor. Each panel carries hinges, rollers and locks, so more panels generally means more hardware. Ask each installer to state the panel count, glass thickness and hardware rating in writing, so you can compare like with like.

Comparing quotes for aluminium folding doors

The lowest price is not always the best value. When your quote arrives, check:

  • Measure and system: whether the price is based on a site measure, and which aluminium profile range is specified for the size of the opening.
  • Glass and finish: safety glass type and thickness, and powder coating or anodising, with a marine-grade finish near the sea.
  • Installation: removal of old frames, fixing, levelling, sealing and making good, and who handles plaster and paint.
  • Guarantee and timing: what the guarantee covers, the lead time for manufacture and the date for fitting.

What to include in your request

  • Opening width and height, and what is above the opening
  • Preferred number of panels and fold direction
  • Framed or frameless, and whether the area is covered
  • Frame colour, glass type and any security gate needed

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between folding and stacking doors?
Folding doors are hinged together and concertina to the side, clearing almost the whole opening. Stacking doors slide behind each other on parallel tracks, so a portion of the opening stays covered by the stacked panels.
How many panels should my folding bifold doors have?
It depends on the width of the opening and the panel size the system allows. Three to seven panels is common for homes. An installer will suggest a layout once they have measured.
Are frameless folding doors suitable for exposed areas?
They are best under a roof or in sheltered spots. In areas with wind-driven rain, such as coastal sites, a framed aluminium bifold with weather seals and a raised sill usually performs better.
Can folding doors be locked securely?
Framed bifolds use multi-point locks on the traffic door and shoot bolts on the other panels. For more security, ask about a folding or retractable security gate inside the opening.
