A security door or gate adds a second, lockable barrier in front of your main door, so you can leave the glass open for air while keeping intruders out. In South Africa most homes have one on the front door and every sliding door onto the garden. Aluminium versions won't rust and are lighter to operate than steel. AluminiumDoor.co.za passes your free request to an independent security gate or door installer in your area, who quotes you directly. We don't make or fit gates ourselves.

Types of security door gate

The common security door gate styles are:

  • Trellis or expandable gates: concertina-style gates that fold to the side when open, the classic security gate for a sliding door
  • Fixed or hinged security gates: a framed gate with bars or a pattern, hinged like a door
  • Retractable security door: slim vertical bars or panels that slide and stack away neatly, with a cleaner look than trellis
  • Security screen doors: a framed door with heavy mesh that keeps out insects as well as intruders

Locks and fixing make the difference

A security gate is only as strong as its lock and fixings. Ask for a lock that cannot be reached through the bars, a lock box or shroud over the cylinder, and anti-lift features on sliding gates. Frames should be bolted into masonry, not just plugged, with tamper-proof fixings. On a large opening, top and bottom guides keep a trellis gate from being forced out of its track. A gate that locks from both sides is convenient but plan for quick exit in an emergency.

Aluminium versus steel

Steel is the traditional choice and is very strong, but it rusts if the galvanising or paint is damaged, especially near the sea. Aluminium security gates use thicker, reinforced sections to make up for the softer metal, never need painting and are easy to slide. For high-risk areas or large openings, many installers recommend steel or a heavy aluminium profile; for coastal homes, aluminium avoids the rust streaks that steel gates leave on walls and paving.

Security door prices: what drives the cost

We don't publish security door prices. Your quote will depend on the opening width and height, the gate style (retractable designs usually cost more than standard trellis), the material and profile weight, the lock, the finish colour and how difficult the fixing surfaces are. Several gates for one house are often quoted together.

Comparing quotes for aluminium security doors

The lowest price is not always the best value. When your quote arrives, check:

  • Measure and system: whether the price is based on a site measure, and which aluminium profile range is specified for the size of the opening.
  • Glass and finish: safety glass type and thickness, and powder coating or anodising, with a marine-grade finish near the sea.
  • Installation: removal of old frames, fixing, levelling, sealing and making good, and who handles plaster and paint.
  • Guarantee and timing: what the guarantee covers, the lead time for manufacture and the date for fitting.

What to include in your request

  • Width and height of each opening that needs a gate
  • Which door it protects: front door, sliding door or stacking door
  • Preferred style: trellis, fixed, retractable or mesh
  • Colour, number of gates and the wall type for fixing

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a trellis gate and a retractable security door?
A trellis gate expands and folds on a diagonal lattice. A retractable security door uses straight vertical bars or panels that slide and stack, giving a neater look and a clearer view when open.
Can a security gate be fitted to a large stacking or sliding door?
Yes. Wide openings often use two gates that meet in the middle, or a multi-panel retractable system. The installer will check the fixing surfaces and track positions.
Are aluminium security gates strong enough?
Good aluminium gates use thick, reinforced profiles and solid locks, which deter most break-ins. For very high-risk areas, ask the installer to compare heavier aluminium and steel options.
Do you install security gates?
No. We pass your free request to an independent installer in your area, who quotes and does the installation if you accept.
