A stacker door lets you open far more of a wall than an ordinary slider. Its panels run on parallel tracks and slide behind one another, so three to six panels can open up a wide patio or entertainment area. Aluminium stacking doors are strong enough to carry large glass panels and need little maintenance. Describe your opening and we pass the request to an independent fabricator or installer in your area for a direct quote. We don't make or install doors ourselves, and the service is free with no obligation.

How a stacker aluminium door works

With stacker aluminium doors, each panel has its own track. When you open the door, the moving panels slide one behind the next until they sit together, usually behind a fixed panel. A three-panel stacker opens about two-thirds of the width; four or six panels can open even more, and some configurations open from the centre to both sides. Because panels stack rather than fold, a stacker keeps a clean line of glass when closed and is easier to lock than many folding systems.

Tracks, thresholds and drainage

  • Multi-track sills: a three-panel stacker needs a three-track sill, so the frame is deeper than a standard slider
  • Flush or low thresholds: a recessed track gives an almost level step to the patio but needs careful drainage
  • Weather: exposed openings at the coast or facing Highveld storms need a raised sill and good seals
  • Rollers: heavy-duty adjustable rollers carry large glass panels smoothly

Plan the threshold early, ideally before the floor screed is laid.

Stacking door prices: what affects the cost

We don't list stacking door prices, but the cost of an aluminium stacking door mostly comes down to the overall width and height, the number of panels and tracks, the weight class of the profile system, the glass specification (safety glass is required, and double glazing helps with SANS 10400-XA energy rules), the finish, locks and handles, and whether the threshold must be recessed into the floor. A taller opening may also need structural input on the lintel above. Removing an existing wall section to create the opening is building work, so ask whether the quote includes it or whether a builder is needed first.

Planning a stacker for your patio

Decide which way you want the panels to stack, where furniture will sit when the door is open, and whether you need a security gate or retractable trellis across the opening. If you are building or renovating, ask your fabricator for the required structural opening sizes so the builder can prepare the brickwork. Then send us your details and an independent installer near you will measure and quote.

Comparing quotes for aluminium stacking doors

The lowest price is not always the best value. When your quote arrives, check:

  • Measure and system: whether the price is based on a site measure, and which aluminium profile range is specified for the size of the opening.
  • Glass and finish: safety glass type and thickness, and powder coating or anodising, with a marine-grade finish near the sea.
  • Installation: removal of old frames, fixing, levelling, sealing and making good, and who handles plaster and paint.
  • Guarantee and timing: what the guarantee covers, the lead time for manufacture and the date for fitting.

What to include in your request

  • Total width and height of the opening
  • How many panels and which direction they should stack
  • Whether you want a flush threshold and if the floor is finished
  • Glass type, frame colour and any security gate needed

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a stacker door and a sliding door?
A standard sliding door has two panels with one moving. A stacker has three or more panels on separate tracks that slide behind each other, so you can open a much larger part of the wall.
How many panels can an aluminium stacking door have?
Three to six panels is typical for homes, and larger systems can go further. The number depends on the width of the opening and the size of each panel.
Can a stacker door have a flush threshold?
Yes, many systems allow a recessed track for a near-level transition. It needs proper drainage and is best planned before the floor is finished, especially on exposed sides of the house.
Is a stacker door secure?
Panels lock to each other and to the frame, and anti-lift features stop them being removed from the track. Many owners add a security gate or trellis across the opening for extra protection.
