A new shower door stops water reaching the bathroom floor and can make a small room look larger. Aluminium is the usual frame material because it doesn't rust in constant moisture and can be finished in chrome, black, brushed or white. Whether you want a sliding shower door, a pivot door or a frameless panel, AluminiumDoor.co.za passes your free request to an independent shower door installer or glass supplier near you, who quotes you directly. We don't sell or install anything ourselves.

Sliding, pivot and bi-fold shower doors

The right opening style depends mostly on space:

  • Sliding shower door: one or two panels run on wheels along a top or bottom track, so nothing swings into the room; good for wide or bath-front openings
  • Shower door pivot: the door turns on pivots at top and bottom and can open outwards or both ways, suiting square cubicles
  • Bi-fold shower door: folds in half against itself, useful where there is little clearance
  • Hinged doors: glass-to-wall or glass-to-glass hinges, often used with frameless panels

Framed, semi-frameless or frameless

A framed door has aluminium around every panel; it is the most forgiving on uneven walls and usually the most affordable. Semi-frameless keeps the aluminium to the wall channels and tracks, with exposed glass edges on the door. A frameless shower door uses thicker toughened glass with minimal hardware for a clean look, but it needs accurate tiling and careful fitting. All shower glass must be safety glass, and toughened glass is the standard choice.

Seals, wheels and maintenance

Most leaks come from worn seals rather than the glass. Vinyl drip and magnetic seals, bottom sweeps and silicone joints should be checked and replaced when they harden or split. On sliding doors, the wheels and rollers wear over time and can be replaced without changing the whole unit. An easy-clean glass coating and a quick squeegee after each shower reduce limescale, which is helpful in hard-water areas.

Shower door installation: what affects the quote

The cost of shower door installation depends on the opening size, the door style, glass thickness and type (clear, frosted or patterned), the frame finish, whether walls and the shower base are square, and whether an old enclosure has to be removed. Odd sizes and corner or angled enclosures are made to measure. We don't publish prices; the installer will measure on site before confirming.

Comparing quotes for aluminium shower doors

The lowest price is not always the best value. When your quote arrives, check:

  • Measure and system: whether the price is based on a site measure, and which aluminium profile range is specified for the size of the opening.
  • Glass and finish: safety glass type and thickness, and powder coating or anodising, with a marine-grade finish near the sea.
  • Installation: removal of old frames, fixing, levelling, sealing and making good, and who handles plaster and paint.
  • Guarantee and timing: what the guarantee covers, the lead time for manufacture and the date for fitting.

What to include in your request

  • Width and height of the shower opening, and whether it is a recess, corner or over a bath
  • Sliding, pivot, bi-fold or frameless preference
  • Glass type and frame colour
  • Whether an old door must be removed, and a photo of the shower

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, a sliding or a pivot shower door?
A sliding door suits wide openings and small bathrooms because nothing swings out. A pivot door gives a wider clear entry in a square cubicle but needs space in front to open.
Is a frameless shower door worth it?
It looks cleaner and is easier to wipe down, but it uses thicker glass and needs accurate tiling, so it usually costs more than a framed door. Framed doors cope better with uneven walls.
My shower door leaks. Do I need a new one?
Not always. Replacing seals, sweeps, silicone or worn sliding wheels often solves leaks and sticking. An installer can tell you whether a repair or replacement makes more sense.
Do you supply shower doors?
No. We pass your free request to an independent shower door installer or glass supplier in your area, who quotes you directly.
